The
.s2p
files are stored on the instrument under
C:\R_S\INSTR\USER\external_frontends\<frontend_type>\
touchstonefiles\
. For example, the files for the IF cable are stored under
C:\R_S\Instr\user\external_frontends\FE44S\touchstonefiles\
if_default_cable_1347_7552_00.s2p
.
Configuration
External frontends are configured individually for each measurement application. The
settings are preserved after presetting the instrument, and are included in savesets.
The frontend is controlled and configured by the R&S
FSV/A using the common config-
uration settings.
There are some minor differences in the measurement settings if an external frontend
is active:
●
The available frequency range, reference level and attenuation are adapted to the
values supported by the configured frontend.
●
Amplitude settings refer to the RF input at the external frontend, not the levels at
the RF input of the R&S
FSV/A (which is the downconverted IF data from the fron-
tend).
●
Electronic attenuation, preamplifier, and noise cancellation are not available.
●
Auto settings are not available for active external frontends.
●
Input coupling is always DC.
●
Impedance is always 50
Ω
.
●
Only external triggers, I/Q power triggers, and (periodic) time triggers are suppor-
ted as trigger sources.
●
Depending on the bandwidth extension options available on the R&S
FSV/A, the
maximum I/Q bandwidth is 1
GHz.
●
If global activation of the external frontend is on, but the connection state of the
configured frontend is off, the R&S
FSV/A application is temporarily "on hold". It is
set up for and awaiting input from the external frontend, but the connection is abor-
ted. Thus, further measurement configuration is not possible until the frontend is
reconnected, or global activation is stopped.
●
Input from external frontends cannot be used simultaneously with:
–
External generator control
–
I/Q file input
External frontends and B1000
As mentioned above, the external frontend converts the RF input signal to the IF signal
that is processed as input by the R&S
FSV/A. The B1000 option, which extends the
available analysis bandwidth to 1
GHz, is only available for input frequencies starting at
7.5
GHz. Thus, to use the extended analysis bandwidth, the external frontend must
downconvert all RF input signals to an IF frequency above 7.5
GHz. In this case, you
must set the
to "IF High". The used intermediate fre-
quency and the resulting frequency band that can be analyzed on the R&S
FSV/A are
