Operating Modes, Applications, Channel
Setups, and Result Displays
If the "Spectrum Analysis" hardware option B1 is installed, the R&S
ZNL is actually two
instruments in one: a vector network analyzer (VNA) and a spectrum analyzer (SA).
The R&S
ZNL integrates the functionality of the two as separate operating modes in
one instrument. The advantage is that you can perform typical network analyzer tasks
on a dedicated network analyzer, and spectrum analyzer tasks on a dedicated spec-
trum analyzer, without having to buy, maintain, and set up two individual instruments.
Furthermore, you can easily and quickly switch between measurement tasks in differ-
ent operating modes, and hardly notice the difference in operation. Both are just differ-
ent applications on the same instrument. Internally, however, the data is processed
using entirely separate hardware, always optimized to the selected operating mode.
The "Spectrum Analysis" option is not available for the R&S
ZNLE.
Note that interruptions in analog output may occur if you switch between a VNA and a
spectrum application, due to the separate hardware. In particular, if you run a
sequence of measurements including both measurement types, switching between
both modes can interrupt the signal from the output connector.
The Spectrum operating mode allows you to perform all sorts of different analysis tasks
on different types of signals, e.g. Analog Demodulation, I/Q analysis or basic spectrum
analysis. Depending on the task or type of signal, a different set of measurement func-
tions and parameters are required. Therefore, the Spectrum operating mode provides
various applications - some of which are included in the base unit, others are optional.
The default application when you start the R&S
ZNL/ZNLE is "VNA", for basic network
analysis.
Channel Setups
When you activate an application, a new channel setup is created which determines
the measurement settings for that application. The same application can be activated
with different measurement settings by creating several channel setups for the same
application.
The number of channel setups that can be configured at the same time depends on the
available memory on the instrument.
For more information on creating channel setups, see
