Today switches must provide users with a wide variety of services, such as integrated voice, video,
data and online gaming. They are also required to be able to implement policies such as bandwidth
rate-limiting and network access hierarchies, to ensure the integrity of the network.
The devices implement the modern and more efficient hardware implementation of routing,
switching, rate limiting, and traffic shaping. The hardware based implementation enables wire-
speed Layer 2 switching, Layer 3 routing and Flow Classification for rate-limiting and ACLs. In
addition, this approach works without CPU intervention.
Figure 3
illustrates the general
architecture of the device forwarding procedure when rate limit is configured.
