DHCP Option 66
DHCP option 66, defined in RFC 2132 (DHCP Options and BOOTP Vendor Extensions), provides
the user with the IP address or the host name of the TFTP server that contains a downloadable
configuration file.
DHCP Option 67
DHCP option 67 is used to specify the name of the boot file. Enabling DHCP Option 67 on the
device will specify what boot file the DHCP client is to download.
DHCP Server Benefits
The DHCP Server feature offers the following benefits:
•
Reduced Internet access costs:
Using automatic IP address assignment at each remote site substantially reduces Internet access
costs. Static IP addresses are considerably more expensive to purchase than are automatically
allocated IP addresses.
•
Reduced client configuration tasks and costs:
The DHCP server minimizes operational overhead and costs associated with device
configuration tasks and eases deployment by non-technical users.
•
Because the DHCP server maintains configurations for several subnets, an administrator only
needs to update a single, central server when configuration parameters change.
DHCP Server in the Application Software
The DHCP Server can handle 3000 clients. The DHCP Server can supply the clients with:
•
IP addresses
•
Domain name
•
Domain name server addresses
•
Default gateway address
•
Broadcast address
•
WINS server address
•
Merit Dump
•
Root path
•
Log server
•
Boot file name
•
Booting server address.
In addition, the DHCP server can provide specific setups for separate hosts such as:
•
Fixed IP address assignment
•
Boot file name
•
Booting server address.
