If the value assigned to the aging time is too short, addresses may be removed from the table too
soon. This would increase the amount of packets received by the device with unknown
destinations, impairing performance by causing the device to flood such packets to all ports in the
VLAN that includes the receiving port. If the value assigned to the aging time is too long, the
address table may be loaded with addresses that are no longer in use.

aging time.

Setting the MAC Address Table Aging Time
The
mac-address-table aging-time
command, in Global Configuration mode, sets the MAC
address table aging time. The
no
form of this command disables the MAC address table aging time.
NOTE
The actual aging time period of the MAC address table may be any time period
between the specified value and twice the specified value.
By default, the aging-time value is 300 seconds.

Argument Description
time
The aging time value in seconds, in the range <30-1048575> in seconds.
Example
The following example sets the MAC Address aging time to 1500 seconds (25 minutes):

Displaying the MAC Address Table Aging Time
The
show mac-address-table aging-time
command, in Privileged (Enable) mode, displays the
MAC-address table aging time. If the aging time is disabled, the message “aging is off” appears.
