Watchdog Features
The Watchdog is a set of system features used for monitoring specific device tasks and/or
processes. In some cases, these tasks/processes are mission-critical, in others; they provide
monitoring information for switch administration.
However, unlike the other monitoring features, Watchdog monitoring also triggers several
automated actions to correct the situation if a monitored event or process goes wrong, thus adding
a bit of artificial intelligence to the device.
Overview
The Watchdog integrates three features:
1.
Reset-Loop Detection
- detects and stops a reset-loop.
2.
SNMP Request Failure Detection
- detects failure of an SNMP request and resets the device if
this occurs.
3.
CPU Task Suspension Detection
- detects suspended CPU task and issues log notifications.
Table 9
lists the Watchdog commands.

Command
Description
service sw-watchdog
Enables access to Watchdog Configuration mode and its
configuration options.
sw-watchdog system reset-
loop
Enables the Reset-Loop Detection, sets the reset loop
detection time period and specifies the interface to be used
as a maintenance port when a reset loop is detected.
no sw-watchdog system
reset-loop
Disables the Reset-Loop Detection and prevents the
system from being monitored for reset loops.
sw-watchdog system snmp-
request-reset
Enables the SNMP request failure detection, specifies the
timeout period and resets the device in case of an SNMP
request failure.
no sw-watchdog system
snmp-request-reset
Disables the SNMP Request Failure Detection and
prevents the system from being monitored for SNMP
request failures.
sw-watchdog task-
suspension
Enables monitoring for suspended CPU tasks and logs
notifications to the NVRAM upon detecting a suspended
CPU task.
no sw-watchdog task-
suspension
Disables CPU task-suspension detection and logging.
