Downloading and Uploading Configuration Files Using
TFTP
Understanding How TFTP Download and Upload of Configuration
Files Work
You can download the configuration file to the device or upload it from the device using TFTP.
TFTP allows downloading and uploading configuration files over the network from a TFTP server.
Preparing to Download a Configuration File Using TFTP
Before the user begins to download a configuration file using TFTP, make sure of the following:
Ensure that the workstation acting as the TFTP server is configured properly.
Ensure that the device has a route to the TFTP server. The device and the TFTP server must be in
the same subnet if the user does not have a router to route traffic between subnets. Check
connectivity to the TFTP server using the ping command.
Ensure that the configuration file to be downloaded is in the correct directory on the TFTP server.
If the user is downloading the configuration file to the running configuration, make sure that there
are no conflicts between the two configuration files.
Ensure that the permissions in the file are set correctly. The user should always have permission to
read
the specific username.
Preparing to Upload a Configuration File Using TFTP
Before the user begins to upload a configuration file using TFTP, take the following precautions:
Ensure that the workstation acting as the TFTP server is configured properly.
Ensure that the device has a route to the TFTP server. The device and the TFTP server must be in
the same subnet if the user does not have a router to route traffic between subnets. Check
connectivity to the TFTP server using the
ping
command.
Ensure that the directory into which the file is to be uploaded does not contain a configuration file
with the same name.
Downloading a Configuration File Using TFTP
To download a software configuration file to the switch from a TFTP server, proceed as
follows:
1.
Copy the Configuration file to the appropriate TFTP directory on the workstation.
2.
Log into the device through the console port or through a Telnet session.
3.
Download the configuration file from the TFTP server using the copy running-config
download-from or copy startup-config download-from command in Privileged (Enable)
mode.
NOTE
The switch remains operational while downloading configuration files.
