You can change this parameter at any time by modifying the instance parameters of the Wall Family Type.
The Structural Usage options are used for the following:
Used for rigid planar surfaces that inherently resist lateral thrusts of shear
Shear
Walls that support a vertical load in addition to their own weight
Bearing
Walls that support no vertical load except that of their own weight and used to define
and divide spaces
Non Bearing
Walls that serve more than one purpose
Structural Combined
Creating a Structural Wall
To create a structural wall

On the Structural tab of the Design Bar, click Structural Wall.

Select the family type of the wall that you want in the Type Selector on the Options Bar.
Set the following in the Options Bar as needed.

Optionally, change the instance properties of the wall to be placed if desired by clicking
. See
Instance Properties and Type Properties
on page 76.
Modify the Type Parameters of the wall to be placed by clicking the Edit/New button in the
Element Properties dialog. See

The Height/Depth area of the Options Bar is shown in the following illustration.
You may pre-select the height (top) or depth (base) of a structural wall from the Options Bar.
Select either Height or Depth from the list box, then use the Constraint list to the right of
Height/Depth selection to set the constraint of the top or base of the wall either by Level or as
Unconnected. If you select Unconnected, specify the height or depth by entering the value to
the right of the constraint list. The Unconnected Height/Depth measurement is relative to the
current Level.

On the Options Bar, select Chain if you intend to create a series of walls.
