NOTE Worksets function similarly to External References (xrefs) in AutoCAD, with the additional ability to propagate
and coordinate changes between team members.
Typical worksharing tasks include the following:
■ Create a local copy of the central file.
It is generally recommended that you create a local copy of the central file every day. After you create a
local copy of the central file, this is the file you work in.

■ Open and edit your local copy of the central file.
You can make edits by borrowing elements or using worksets.
See Editing Workshared Projects on page 1197.
■ Publish your changes to the central file, or get the latest changes from the central file.
Publishing your changes is known as saving to central. This allows other team members to view the
changes you have made. When you save to central, your local copy of the central file also updates with
the latest changes other team members have saved to the central file.
You can update your local copy of the central file without saving to central by loading updates from the
central file.

■ Work offsite or offline.
You do not have to be connected to a network to make your changes, or to open or edit worksets. This
is useful for team members who work offsite and access the central file remotely.
WARNING Working offline can put your project at risk.

Creating a Local Copy of the Central File
It is generally recommended that you create a local copy of the central file every day.
1 Open the central file.
2 Click File menu

Save As.
3 In the Save As dialog, navigate to a location on your local network or your hard drive.
4 Enter a name for the file, and click Save.
Editing Workshared Projects
When using a workshared project, you can edit individual elements or you can edit worksets. When you
borrow an individual element or open a workset, the elements are visible to other users but are not editable
until you relinquish the borrowed element or workset.
When you request to borrow an element that is not owned by anyone, permission to edit the element is
automatically granted. If you need to modify an element in a workset that is owned by another team member,
you can request to borrow that element without requiring the workset owner to relinquish control of the
entire workset.
NOTE To edit an element or a workset, they must be up-to-date. If you attempt to edit an element or a workset
that is not up-to-date, you are prompted to update your local copy of the central file so that you have all of the
latest changes.
