Example of project with loaded door family with angular dimensioned reference
line
To add and dimension a reference line:

In the drawing area, add a reference line with the point of origin located at the point of expected
rotation.

Add an angular dimension referring to the reference line.

Label the dimension.

On the Design Bar, click Family Types.

Change the angular value for the labelled dimension and click Apply.
This is known as flexing the model. It is important to make sure the reference line adjusts as
expected before adding model geometry to it.
To add and align model geometry to a reference line:

Set the current work plane to one of the faces of the reference line and add the model geometry
that you intend to have controlled by the angular dimension.
The geometry moves with the reference line as the angle changes.

Flex the model to make sure the design works as expected.
Modifying Reference Line Properties

In the drawing area, select the reference line.

In the Element Properties dialog, specify the following:

Work Plane: This is read-only and reports the work plane that the reference line resides on.
To change this, click Edit Work Plane on the Options Bar when the reference line is selected.

Visible: Select this setting if you want the reference line to be visible when the family is
loaded into a project.
■
Length: This is read-only and reports the length of the line. To control the line length, drag
the shape handles in the drawing area or add a labelled dimension to the reference line.
■
Reference: Specify Not a reference, Strong Reference, or Weak Reference.

Click OK.
Creating Family Types
Generally, there are multiple types of standard families. Revit Architecture allows you to create a single
family and create many types for it. To do this you need to label the dimensions that are going to change.
