PERFORMANCE TEST
CAUTION:
Each test must be performed within 3–5 seconds to avoid
coil from burning.
WARNING:
When preforming the following test, be sure to connect
the battery and the starting motor with a lead wire of the
same size as the cable that was originally used there.
PULL-IN TEST
Connect battery to magnetic switch (1) as shown.
Check that plunger and pinion (over-running clutch) move out-
ward.
If plunger and pinion (over-running clutch) don’t move, replace
magnetic switch.
NOTE:
Before testing, disconnect field coil lead (2) from ‘M’ terminal
(3).

HOLD-IN TEST
While connected as above with plunger out, disconnect negative
lead from ‘M’ terminal (1).
Check that plunger and pinion remain out.
If plunger and pinion return inward, replace magnetic switch (2).

BAT
PLUNGER AND PINION RETURN TEST
Disconnect negative lead (1) from switch body (2).
Check that plunger and pinion return inward.
If plunger and pinion don’t return, replace magnetic switch.

NO-LOAD PERFORMANCE TEST
a) Connect battery and ammeter to starting motor (1) as shown.
b) Check that starter rotates smoothly and steadily with pinion
moving out. Check that ammeter indicates specified current.
No load current: Within 53A at 11.5V
