SEC Lite Overview
This chapter provides an overview of the PowerQUICC™ integrated security engine (SEC Lite), including
a brief development history, target applications, key features, block architectural overview, and a
performance summary.
46.1
Development History
The SEC Lite is derived from the Motorola MPC185 “Talos” security processor (SEC), a member of the
Smart Networks platform’s S1 family of security processors developed for the commercial networking
market. The SEC is modular and scalable, and has been optimized for the MPC885 and MPC875, the
PowerQUICC family members which integrate the SEC. The SEC included in the MPC885 is a
reduced-feature-set version, compared to previous SEC implementations, and is therefore referred to as
the SEC Lite.

Features
The SEC Lite is designed to offload computationally-intensive security functions, such as message
authentication and bulk encryption, from the processor core of the MPC885 microprocessor. It is
optimized to process all the algorithms associated with IPSec, SRTP, and 802.11i.
SEC Lite includes the following features:

DEU—Data Encryption Standard execution unit
— DES, 3DES
— Two-key (K1, K2, K1) or three-key (K1, K2, K3)
— ECB and CBC modes for both DES and 3DES

AESU—Advanced Encryption Standard execution unit
— Implements the Rijndael symmetric-key cipher
— ECB, CBC, and counter modes
— 128-, 192-, 256-bit key lengths

MDEU—message digest execution unit
— SHA with 160-bit or 256-bit message digest
— MD5 with 128-bit message digest
— HMAC with either algorithm
•
Crypto-channel supporting multi-command descriptor chains
•
Integrated controller managing internal resources, and bus mastering
•
Buffer size of 256 bytes for the DEU, AESU, and MDEU, with flow control for large data sizes
