Performance Monitoring (PM)
A connection’s performance is monitored by inspecting blocks of cells (delimited by forward monitoring
cells) sent between connection or segment endpoints. Each forward monitoring cell (FMC) contains
statistics about the immediately preceding block of cells. When an endpoint receives an FMC, the statistics
generated locally across the same block are added to produce a backward reporting cell (BRC), which is
then returned to the opposite endpoint.
Up to 64 bidirectional or unidirectional block tests are supported simultaneously for each controller (SCC
or UTOPIA). When running a PM test, FMCs are generated for the transmit direction and terminated in
the receive direction. The user may choose to activate PM in any direction by setting the PM bit in the
receive connection table (RCT), transmit connection table (TCT) or both for a bidirectional PM test.

shows the FMC and BRC structure.
