Chapter 7
Configuring Inter-Nodal Trunks
A trunk carries traffic between two nodes of any type among FRX8000 (all node
types), N7400, and N7500. There are three types of trunk:
●
Physical trunk
●
Logical trunk over physical frame relay link (FRX8000 only)
●
Logical trunk over physical X.25 link
To configure a logical trunk over physical X.25 on an N7400 or 7500, con-
figure a physical PDN port (described on
page 7-11
), then a logical PDN
port on that physical port.
An FRX8000 supports up to 64 trunks to up to 64 nodes. An N7400 or N7500 supports
up to 31 trunks to up to 20 nodes. A trunk between an FRX8000 and an N74/7500 can
be created by configuring both ends as physical trunk, or by configuring the FRX8000
port as logical trunk over X.25 and the N74/7500 port as a logical PDN port.
Parallel Trunks
Parallel trunks are two or more trunks between the same two nodes. The trunk process
in each node attempts to split the load across parallel trunks proportional to the speeds
of the individual trunks. The node software examines each packet’s the queue length
on each parallel trunk and, using the configured line speed and propagation delay,
computes the delivery time over each trunk. The trunk with the shortest delivery time
is used. This process is called load balancing.
Parallel trunks can increase reliability over a single trunk; however, more
processor time is required to determine which trunk to use, and the proba-
bility of packets reaching the destination node out of sequence is greatly
increased. Out-of-sequence packets must be held until the gaps are filled
in, causing increased buffer usage.
Parallel trunks running at different speeds make load balancing difficult because of the
variability of predicted delivery times. The node software does not normally consider
any trunk that is less than half the speed of the fastest parallel trunk.
If circumstances dictate, all trunks can be recognized by enabling low
speed trunk balancing. However, this should not be done unless absolutely
necessary. Contact Cabletron Systems Technical Support for information.
