SAP
stands for “Service Advertising Protocol” or “Service Access Point.” Service Adver-
tising Protocol allows routers and servers to exchange internetwork service infor-
mation; e.g., locations and availability of file and print servers (which connect to the
network at Service Access Points).
scosysv!login:
is the UNIX login prompt. At this prompt, enter your login name (and password, if
required) to proceed with normal system operations, or your “root” password to enter
maintenance mode.
SDLC
stands for “synchronous data link control,” IBM's version of CCITT's HDLC (high-
level data link control) bit-oriented protocol.
Segmentation
is the same as Fragmentation.
SNA
stands for IBM's “Systems Network Architecture.”
Socket
is an abstract entity that allows a process to access the Internet. The process opens a
socket, specifies the service desired (e.g., reliable delivery of data, preservation of
message ordering, preservation of message boundaries), binds the socket to a
destination, then transmits data.
start -icp
is the executable that starts the management processes in an FRX8000 or N7500 INM.
Subscriber
is a user device accessing the network.
SVC
stands for “switched virtual circuit,” which is a temporary logical association between
two subscribers connected to a network, analogous to connection by a dial-up line.
T
TCP
stands for “transmission control protocol,” which is the Internet standard transport
layer protocol.
TELNET
is the MIL-STD-1782 (Military Standard 1782) protocol, which allows a device using
the protocol to act as an asynchronous terminal.
