FRX8000 3. 0 User G uide, Rev 02
Remote Control
This function allows an INM or NMP operator to take control of any Cabletron frame
relay device (FRX8000 (including an FRX8000 NMP’s local node), FRX4000,
FRX6000, SmartSwitch 1800, or SmartSwitch 9000 Frame Relay Module) on the
network, as long as the correct ID and password for that node are known. Once the
node is under remote control, the INM/NMP video screen will display the Main Menu
of the controlled node.
If you take remote control of an FRX8000 INM or NMP node, only the node software
will be under remote control. NMP management functions will still be under the
control of the remote operator.
To take remote control of a non-FRX8000 Cabletron frame relay device, a
database record must exist in the FRX8000 Subscriber file, specifying the
Remote Control ID
of the remote node (configured in its database) as an
FRX8000 Subscriber ID.
Any operation being performed at a remote non-FRX8000
device will be aborted when the node comes under control of an
INM/NMP.
These restrictions apply to the Remote Control operation:
●
A node cannot be controlled by more than one remote device at a time.
●
While remotely controlling one node, you cannot take remote control of another
one.
●
While a node is under remote control, its keyboard is blocked to prevent local
operation, with one exception—if you take remote control of an INM or NMP
node, an operator at the remote site can still perform NMP management opera-
tions.
This operation is designed to control another Cabletron frame
relay device, but it might accidentally be used to call some other
device. If this happens, the results will be unpredictable.
To take remote control:
1. Press
[F]
at the Operations Menu (
[B], [F]
from the Main Menu).
2. When prompted:
Is remote node an 8000 [Y] or 4000/6000 [N]:
, press
[Y]
or
[N]
.
3. When prompted, enter:
◆
Remote node number (FRX8000) or Remote Control ID (FRX4000,
FRX6000, SmartSwitch 1800, FRM—configured in the Node file of the
remote node).
◆
Remote Control Password of the node to be controlled.
The message
Placing a call to 999999nnn7
(where
nnn
is the number of the node you
are calling) will be displayed.
