Configuring IP
14-9
IP Route Parameters
Router
is the IP address of a router that can reach the route destination.
Metric Count
is the number of “hops” (network gateways in the overall path over the internet) from
the source to the destination.
Route Type
0
= Network – defines a route for a network.
1
= Host – defines a route for a specific host.
2
= Default – defines a route that will be used if no other route is found.
Route Destination
is the IP address of the destination for host routes.
Destination Mask
is the mask used for network routes. It is used only during routing, to determine the
portion of the address associated with the destination.
When an IP datagram is received, the software searches for a match to the destination
address in the node's IP routing table. If there is no match, then destination masks are
checked. If no match is found here either, the default route (if configured) will be used.
(If the default route is not configured, the datagram will be discarded, and an error
message will be sent to the source.)
