Windows NT Server Version 4.0 Setup Procedure
Note: It is assumed that the person loading the software is familiar with installing Microsoft Windows
products.
Although this NT Server setup procedure is mostly automated, there are several parameters that
must be entered manually during the setup:
Q
Before installing the Windows NT Server, determine if you can pre-format the hard disk. The
Windows NT Server setup has a limitation; it can format the first partition (the C: drive) to a
maximum size of 4 GB, but the space remaining on the hard disk must be in a second partition.
If you do not want to partition your hard disk, do the following:
After Windows NT is installed and running, use the Disk Administrator program to format a
second hard disk to its full capacity in one partition. If you have access to a second computer
with an identical motherboard and BIOS, which has a Windows NT Workstation or Server
installed, or if you have another hard disk with Windows NT already on it, pre-format your
Voice Mail system hard disk to its full capacity in one partition with NTFS by temporarily
installing the new hard disk as a second drive, formatting it with the NT Disk Administrator
program, move the hard disk to the computer on which you are installing the Voice Mail soft-
ware, and then start the NT setup procedure. However, skip the hard-disk formatting step
because the hard disk is already formatted.
Q
For the setup, the Windows NT server includes 3 floppy disks and a few CD-ROMs. The BIOS
of the computer determines if the floppy disks must be used to begin the installation. Instead of
floppy disks, some computers support the bootable CD-ROM format that allows the Setup CD
to be read when the computer boots up. If a 1.44 MB disk drive is installed, you may use the
floppy disks to start the setup. However, if a LS-120 superdisk drive is the only disk drive
installed, the computer must boot from the CD-ROM (and the Windows NT setup will proceed
directly from this ROM), because you cannot install Windows NT from the LS-120 superdisk
drive. (For more information, see Starting Setup in the NT Basics and Installation manual.)
Q
For creating an Emergency Repair Disk, have a blank, formatted floppy disk available. This
disk should not be the 1 LS-120 Superdisk Diskette listed above, because the process of creat-
ing a disk for emergency repairs will erase all files currently on it.
