Chapter 3: Programming
Variable length of Mailbox Numbers
Extension numbers in many phone systems contain the same number of digits. This type of
numbering scheme is referred to as fixed-length numbering of extensions. In most cases, the
number assigned to each voice mailbox matches its corresponding phone system extension
number.
Some phone systems allow extension numbers to contain a different number of digits. For
example, extensions may be numbered so that some may contain two digits while others con-
tain four. This type of numbering plan is referred to as variable-length numbering of exten-
sions. The NT Voice Mail System also supports numbers of varied length so that mailboxes
will still match their corresponding phone system extension numbers. The NT Voice Mail sup-
ports up to seven digits in a mailbox number.
However, if you use a variable-length numbering plan, remember that:
all mailbox numbers that begin with the same leading digit must all be of the same length.
For example, you create a three-digit mailbox with a leading digit of 3. All remaining mailbox
numbers with a leading digit 3 must contain three digits. So, if you create mailbox 322, then
you cannot have two-digit mailbox numbers that begin with 3 (such as 30 or 31). In addition,
you cannot have a four-digit mailbox that begins with 3 (such as 3000 or 3010). In the exam-
ple’s numbering plan, the only mailboxes with the leading digit of 3 are numbered 300 to 399.
Creating and Accessing Mailboxes
You can create a mailbox from scratch (add a mailbox), or you can customize (program) an
existing mailbox. The different types of mailboxes are described in detail later in this section.
