Creating Conversion Loops
The Synergy Q/MD switcher uses a conversion loop to pass video to an up/down converter and then to
receive the converted video back. Creating this loop involves both physical installation as well as
software configuration. The main steps involved are:
• Planning Your Conversion Loops
• Cabling Your Conversion Loops
• Configuring Your Switcher
Once the loops have been cabled and configured, you can proceed to configure the SmartConversion
features of the Synergy Q/MD switcher.
Planning Your Conversion Loops
Take into account the following conversion scenarios:
• How many video conversions do you need to perform at one time?
• Do you want to lock one or more conversion loops to a specific bus so it is always
available to that bus?
• Do you want to designate one or more buses as not needing conversion and, therefore,
never requiring conversion loop resources?
• How many different conversion formats do you require (e.g., do you need to up-convert
to both 720p and 1080i)?
• How many conversion loops of each converted video format do you need?
Answering these questions will lead you to the total number of conversion loops that you will need to
cable and configure. You will also know how to subdivide the conversion loops based on the output
video format they provide and if they are locked to a certain bus.
When planning your conversion loops, keep in mind that each one requires one Aux Bus output for
the switcher to send the video to the up/down converter and one input for the up/down converter to
send the converted video back to your switcher. Also note that you need to define the input video
format for the up/down converter so the switcher knows where to send video that needs to be
converted and the output format from the up/down converter so that you can configure the input BNC
on your switcher to match.
Conversion Loop Worksheet
Use the following worksheet to help you plan your conversion loops. To avoid marking up this
document, photocopy the worksheet and use that copy to plan your conversion loops.
Note Depending on your Synergy Q/MD switcher configuration, certain
Aux Bus outputs may be locked. Refer to the section “
AuxKeys
Option ” on page 8–15 for more information on which outputs are
locked.
