Synergy Q/MD Engineering Manual (v9.1 MD)

Software Upgrade

Software upgrades for your Synergy Q/MD switcher are provided free of charge from Ross Video. 
Upgrading your switcher requires you to copy the upgrade file provided by Ross from your computer 
to your switcher and then initiate the upgrade process. You do this via the

Keep the following notes in mind before upgrading your switcher to a newer software version (contact 
Ross Video Technical Support before reverting to an older software version):

•

VDCP Extra Options

 (port number and sub-address) are not retained when upgrading 

from version

 or prior. The 

VDCP Extra Options

 must be re-entered after an 

upgrade.

•

Software versions 

6.0

 and higher handle external device control differently than pre-

versions. If you revert to a pre-

 software version, you may lose any external device 

settings you have made.

Before you can perform the upgrade, you must perform a hard reboot of the switcher to ensure that all 
components are in a known state. This reboot includes both the control panel and the frame, and must 
be performed both before and after the upgrade. 

Preparing the Switcher Before an Upgrade

Recalling the factory default settings for the switcher before the upgrade ensures that all the boards, 
cards, and modules on the switcher are in a known state, and are ready to accept an upgrade. However, 

the factory default procedure reset the reference format. You must set the reference back to the input reference 
that is connected to the switcher, and reboot the switcher before starting the upgrade.

Use the following procedure to prepare the switcher before performing an upgrade:

1. Perform a recall of all factory default settings. Refer to the section “

Recalling Factory 

Default Settings

” on page 11-32 for information on performing a factory default.

2. Set the reference format back to the input reference that is connected to the switcher. 

Refer to the section “

Reference

” on page 11-26 for information on reference setup.

3. Shut down the switcher. Refer to the section “

Shutting Down the Switcher

” on page 

4-14 for information on shutting down the switcher.

4. Wait at least

5. Power up the switcher. Refer to the section “

Power Up

” on page 4-9 for information on 

powering up the switcher.

Important

This upgrade procedure does not apply when upgrading from certain 
software versions. Contact Ross Video Technical Support before 
performing an upgrade for information on any alternate procedures 
that you may need to follow when performing your switcher upgrade.

Important

Because the software upgrade process automatically returns the 
switcher to default values, it is important that you back up all switcher 
registers to the hard drive or USB flash drive at this point.
