messages are identical, so that a received message can be used to send it again. This
is an easy way to create message files. The SMS message file format has a header
with all necessary information. Some of this information will not be used in both direc-
tions. In this case, the information will be blanked out.

Since the channels do have different capacities the length of one message depends on
the selected transmit method. After sending or receiving the SMS the R&S
CMW "MS
Info" display shows the information about the length of the sent or received SMS.
If a SMS message is entered at the GUI, the text is always encoded as ASCII and Tel-
eservice ID
CMT-95
(Wireless Messaging Teleservice) is used.
SMS: Encoding and Data
The R&S
CMW sends and receives messages with data encoding of 7-bit ASCII, 8-bit
binary (2 hex-chars per byte) and 16-bit unicode (4 hex-chars per unicode character).
The maximum quantity of text characters allowed on the data line depends on the used
channel, the encoding and on whether or not a timestamp is used. For the timestamp
assume 9 characters.
Traffic Channel
ASCII: 160 characters
Binary: 140 bytes (2 hex-chars per byte)
Unicode: 70 characters (4 hex-chars per Unicode character)
Paging Channel
