Removing, disassembling and
assembling cylinder head
•
Remove the coolant stub pipe.
•
Remove the air intake stub pipe (
a
13.10).
•
Remove the temperature sensor (
a
61.15).
Removing camshafts
•
Turn the camshafts until the tips of the cams are
clear.
•
Remove the bearing caps (2) for the thrust bear-
ings first, to prevent tilting.
•
Uniformly release screws securing radial bearing
caps (3) and remove them.
•
Take out the camshafts.
Removing bucket-type tappets

Note:
Make a note of which bucket-type tappets belong to
which valves.
•
Use the rubber suction device,
BMW No. 11 3 251
, to pull the bucket-type
tappets (1) out of the cylinder head.
•
Make a note of which tappet belongs to which
valve.
Removing cylinder head
L
Note:
Place a drip tray in position underneath the engine
to catch escaping coolant.
•
Unscrew the cylinder head bolts (4) with Torx in-
sert,

.
•
Loosen the cylinder head with light blows of a
plastic-faced hammer and take it off.
Removing valves
•
Install support plate,
BMW No. 11 1 749
, for the
valve spring clamping device at the rear of the
cylinder head (not the timing end).
•
Install the valve spring clamping device,
BMW No. 11 1 740
.
•
Use compressor,
BMW No. 11 1 748
.

Important:
Centre the compressor in order to avoid damaging
the tappet bores.
•
Place the cylinder head on a suitable underlay
surface, so that the valves can move freely.
•
Loosen the valve collets with light, sharp ham-
mer-blows.
•
Compress the valve springs (3) using compres-
sor,
