Checking battery
(Inspections III and IV)
Check battery acid level and add distilled water
if necessary; inspect battery terminals and clean
and grease them if necessary

Warning:
Battery acid is highly caustic.
Protect your eyes, face, hands, clothing and the
paintwork.
•
Place motorcycle on its centre stand.
•
Remove the seat.
–
Take out the tool wallet. Remove the tool tray.
•
Take off the right-hand rear section (remove 3
screws).
•
Check battery acid level from the right, removing
the battery if necessary.

Removing/installing battery

Attention:
Avoid damage to fuel tank, wiring and hoses. Dis-
connect the battery only when the ignition is swit-
ched off.
To avoid short-circuits: Disconnect
negative
battery
lead (—) first, then
positive
(+) lead.
•
Disconnect negative (–) lead (5) from battery and
insulate it.
•
Swing up the cap covering the positive battery
terminal.
•
Disconnect positive (+) battery lead (4) from the
battery and swing it up out of the cable guide.
•
Remove fasteners (2) for battery retaining
plate (1). Take off battery retaining plate (1).
•
Lift out the battery complete with battery
breather hose (3).
•
Pull off battery breather hose (3).

Attention:
Reconnect the battery only when the ignition is swit-
ched off. To avoid short-circuits:
Connect the
positive
battery lead (+) first,
position the protective cap over the positive battery
terminal,
then connect the
negative
battery lead (—).
Make sure that the battery breather hose is not kin-
ked or blocked.
Battery acid is highly caustic. Do not permit esca-
ping acid vapour to contact the motorcycle body
parts.
•
Clean the battery terminal posts and apply batte-
ry acid protection grease to them.

Attention:
The motorcycle may be operated only with cap (6)
closed and the tool tray in position.
