Removing/installing steering 

damper

–

Remove front wheel (

a 

36.5).

–

Remove left side section of fairing
(

a 

46.8).

–

Remove the rear section of the front mudguard 
(

a 

46.6).

•

Undo the steering damper (2) pivot at leading 
link (1).

•

Remove the plug (arrow) at the bottom of slider 
tube bridge (3).

L

 Note:

The fastener (arrow) for steering damper (4) at the 
slider tube bridge (3) is a multiple-spline screw, se-
cured with a thread-locking compound.

•

Undo the fastener (arrow) for steering damper (4) 
at slider tube bridge (3).

•

Take steering damper (4) off slider tube 
bridge (3) with the sleeve and washer.

•

Installation is the reverse of the removal proce-
dure. Pay particular attention to the following:

e

 Important:

Use only new, genuine screws, because the steer-
ing damper could be damaged beyond repair if the 
screws are of the wrong length.

•

Tighten fastener securing steering damper (4) to 
slider tube bridge (3).

X 

Tightening torque:

Steering damper to leading link
(clean  apply Loctite 243) ................ 21 Nm
Steering damper to slider tube bridge
(clean  apply Loctite 243) ................ 21 Nm

Checking the steering damper

•

With the steering turned to the left, move the 
front end of the piston rod radially to and fro and 
check that there is no play.

•

Check the ball head for freedom from play.

•

Check the piston rod for freedom from play.
