[Additional work for removing engine]
Remove left and right radiators with fans
(
a
17.7).
– Drain coolant.
– Disconnect the plugs for the left and right fans.
– Disconnect the breather hose and the connect-
ing hose from the right to the left radiator.
– Disconnect the coolant hoses from the coolant
stub pipes.
– Disconnect the coolant hose to the lower stub
pipe on the right radiator.
– Pull the left/right radiator with fan and air outlet
guide away from the holder.
– Remove the lid of the electronic equipment box.
– Disconnect the plugs for the ignition sensor, wa-
ter pump temperature sensor and oil pressure
switch.
Raise the frame.
•
Loosen the left/right engine mountings at the
cross-member.
•
Detach the gearbox mounting from the frame.

Important:
Turn the steering to the right to avoid scratches.
When raising the frame, make sure that no lines or
cables are damaged.
•
Using crane, BMW No. 46 5 640 , raise the frame
at the rear just far enough to permit access to the
gearbox, starter and alternator.
[Only for removing engine]
•
Detach the engine from the front cross-member
at the left.
•
Detach the engine from the front cross-member
at the right.

Important:
Make sure that clearance between gearbox and
frame at the right is correct. Mask off the timing case
cover in the engine spoiler holder area.
•
Raise the frame with the Telelever above the en-
gine. Use crane,
BMW No. 46 5 640 .
•
Remove the fuel lines at the engine block.
Transferring the engine to the assembly stand
•
Secure the engine mount, BMW No. 11 0 610 ,
to the crankcase.
•
Lower the platform and transfer the engine to as-
sembly stand,
BMW No. 00 1 490 .
•
Remove the lifter.
Remove the starter motor (
a
12.13).
Remove the generator (
a
12.10).
Remove the gearbox (
a
23.9).
Remove the clutch (
a
21.5).

Lowering the frame

Note:
Valid for the following tasks only:
Installing starter/alternator
Installing clutch/gearbox
Installing engine
[Only for installing engine]
Position stand, BMW No. 00 1 480 , with engine
above lifting platform.
•
Raise the lifting platform carefully.
•
Attach lifting fixture, BMW No. 00 1 510 , to
sump.
•
Raise the platform.
•
Detach the engine mount, BMW No. 11 0 610 ,
from the crankcase and run the assembly stand
out to one side.
Install the clutch (
a
21.8).
Install the gearbox (
a
23.10).
Install the generator (
a
12.12).
Install the starter motor (
a
12.15).

Note:
Before lowering the frame, install the earth (ground)
leads at the starter.

Important:
Make sure that clearance between gearbox and
frame at the right is correct. Mask off the timing case
cover in the engine spoiler holder area. Turn steer-
ing to right to avoid scratches.
When lowering the frame, make sure that no lines or
cables are damaged.
Lowering the frame.
•
Lower the frame with crane, BMW No. 46 5 640 .
•
Insert the gearbox mounting into the frame and
tighten it.
•
Tighten the left/right engine mountings at the
cross-member.
[In addition, when installing engine]
•
Connect the fuel lines to the engine block.
