Removing/installing crankshaft
gear and rotor flange
•
Prevent from turning with retainer,
BMW No. 11 2 800,
(see right).
•
Remove the screw (arrow) for the crankshaft
sprocket and the rotor flange.
•
Pull off rotor flange (1) with light hammer-blows,
and take off the sprocket.
•
Install the crankshaft sprocket first, then tighten
the rotor flange.

Tightening torque:
Rotor flange ................................................. 50 Nm

Measuring backlash at the coun-
tershaft

. Note:
Abnormal noises, especially at low engine speeds,
could be due to excessive backlash between the
crankshaft/countershaft gearing.

. Important:
Always measure backlash with the engine cold.
–
Remove alternator (
a
12.10).
•
Secure dial-guage holder,
BMW No. 00 2 500
,
to gearbox intermediate flange.
•
Use the clamping screw to secure the clamp,
BMW No. 11 5 510
, to the first vane of the driver.
•
Adjust the dial gauge,
BMW No. 00 2 510
, such
that the mark on the tool (3 mm from outside
edge) is aligned with the needle of the dial gauge
on the reference face.
•
Move the driver by hand. Note dial-gauge read-
ing.
•
Remove the clamp,
BMW No. 11 5 510
.
•
Turn the crankshaft to turn the driver through
120°.
•
Secure the clamp to the second driver vane and
use the dial gauge to measure the backlash.
•
Take a third measurement.
•
Calculate the average over the three measured
values.
•
Replace the countershaft if the average obtained
from the three measurements is at least 0.03 mm
(0.0012 in).
