Removing/installing engine
Removing engine

Important:
Disconnect the negative battery terminal first, then
the positive terminal.
–
Remove the battery (
a
00.69).

Warning:
Note safety precautions; the fuel lines are pressu-
rised.
–
Remove fuel tank (
a
16.5).
–
Drain engine oil (
a
00.39).
–
Remove left/right radiators with fans (
a
17.7).
•
Secure lifter,
BMW No. 00 1 510
, to oil sump.
–
Remove exhaust system (
a
18.5).
–
Remove rear swinging arm (
a
33.21).
–
Remove rear cross-tube (
a
46.25).
–
Remove fuel injection rail (
a
13.7).
•
Remove throttle-valve rail together with intake air
silencer.
•
Disconnect cables and connectors for the en-
gine and gearbox.

Important:
Make sure clearance between gearbox and frame at
the right is correct. Mask off the timing case cover in
the area of the front engine spoiler mounting, to pre-
vent scratches.
•
Raise the frame (
a
46.29).
•
Remove the fuel lines from the engine block.
–
Remove starter motor and generator
(
a
12.10)/(
a
12.13).
–
Remove the gearbox (
a
23.9).
•
Transfer engine to assembly frame.
Installing engine
•
Place the engine on the platform with lifting fix-
ture
BMW No. 00 1 510
.
–
Install the gearbox (
a
23.10).
–
Install starter motor and generator
(
a
12.12)/(
a
12.15).
•
Install the fuel lines on the engine block.

Important:
When lowering the frame, make sure that clearance
is correct at the right between frame and gearbox.
–
Lower the frame (
a
46.31).
•
Bolt engine and gearbox into frame.
•
Connect cables and connectors for engine and
gearbox, and secure them with cable ties.
•
Install throttle-valve rail complete with intake air
silencer.
–
Install fuel injection rail (
a
13.7).
–
Install the lower cross-tube (
a
46.25).
–
Install rear swinging arm (
a
33.24).
–
Install exhaust system (
a
18.5).
–
Install left/right radiators with fans (
a
17.7).
–
Fill engine with oil (
a
00.39).
–
Install engine spoiler (
a
46.14).
–
Install the fuel tank (
a
16.5).
–
Install left and right fairing side sections
(
a
46.8).

Important:
Connect and tighten the positive battery terminal
first, then the negative terminal.

Install the battery (
