Optical Translator Basics
Description
Optical Translator Units are used with Optical Line Systems to perform the
following functions:
■
Connecting OC-48/STM-16, OC-12/STM-4, OC-3/STM-1, 100 to 750 Mb/s
or 1-Gb Ethernet systems with non-OLS-compatible optics to an OLS
■
Signal Regeneration between concatenated OLS
■
Wavelength Translation between concatenated OLS
■
Wavelength Add/Drop between OLS

OLS 40G
Optical Translator Units receive any standard optical wavelength with an OC-48,
OC-12, OC-3, 100 to 750 Mb/s, or 1-Gb Ethernet signal and apply that signal to
an OLS compatable optical wavelength while providing an OLS identification tone.
Figure 2-13 shows Optical Translators being used with an OC-48 system.

40G
In OLS 40G systems with many repeater amplifiers, drop OTUs or OLS-
compatible receivers are always required to guarantee performance. For shorter
OLS 40G systems performing fiber congestion relief or metro/regional distribution,
the existing customer standard receivers may perform sufficiently so the drop
OTU is not needed.
The following requirements must be met to omit the drop OTU:
■
The receiving equipment must be co-located with the OLS 40G equipment.
The fiber jumper loss between the ODU on the OLS and the receiver must
have less than 0.5 dB loss. If the receiving equipment is not co-located with
the OLS 40G, then a drop OTU is required.
