WaveStar OLS 40G Basics (Continued)
Release 2.1
Architecture
In addition to the options outlined in the previous section, Release 2.1 includes
another feature for 2-fiber systems that will allow an OLS system to encompass
two or more point-to-point OLS systems. The introduction of the Dual Facing shelf
allows the combining of back-to-back co-located single facing shelves in one
shelf. The coordination of the SYSMEM and SYSCTL packs in one shelf allows
the OSS to communicate across two domains. The operations domain will still not
go from the optical networking equipment across to other TDM (Time Division
Multiplexing) equipment (SONET/SDH or asynchronous/PDH).
With the operations domain extended, the "Ring" topology is extended as well.
The total number of nodes in a "ring" by the old definition is 16, due to the K bits
allocated for carrying the node ID by the SONET standards. The new "ring"
topology will not use the K bits, thus will allow for more than 16 nodes in the ring.
The guaranteed total number of NEs in this release is no more than 32. In these
32 or less nodes, there can be only one DS-NE (Directory Server-Network
Element).
Release 3
Architecture
The WaveStar OLS 40G Telemetry Feed-Through feature allows a four-fiber OLS
system to encompass two or more point-to-point OLS systems, just as the
Release 2.1 Dual-Facing Shelf did for 2-fiber systems. Two co-located WaveStar
OLS 40G End Terminals, each representing an end of an OLS subnetwork, can
be interconnected so that the DCC will pass from one End Terminal to the other.
Thus the operations domain for network operators and/or OSS will be extended
beyond a single OLS subnetwork and can encompass and entire OLS "Ring" with
a single DS-NE.
Release 3.1
Architecture
Release 3.1 provides the Optical Protection Switch (OPS) feature which allows for
protection switching between two diverse two fiber lines. The OPS provides 1 + 1
non-revertive optical protection switching for all sixteen wavelengths in point to
point applications. The OPS provides protection against Optical Amplifier (OA)
failures and fiber cuts. The OPS will perform uni-directional or bi-directional, non-
revertive switching of all traffic regardless of wavelengths, bit rates and formats.
This application is useful in point to point systems where there is no other means
of protection such as ring back switching or span switching.
