OMU Tests

OMU Test 
Description and 
Cautions

The optical amplifier output noise is used as a signal source to verify continuity 
through the OMU. The ODU is used to filter the wide-band noise into a narrow 
band. The OMU inputs are not wavelength-sensitive, so the ODU OCHAN1 output 
is used for convenience.

DANGER:

Disabling the Automatic Power Shut-Down (APSD) feature results in a FDA/
IEC ClassIIIb/3B laser hazard. APSD is a safety feature. Do not attempt to 
defeat or disable APSD. Defeating APSD may result in harm to personnel 
exposed to disconnected or cut optical fibers.

CAUTION:

To comply with IEC regulations, systems containing an IEC Class 3B laser 
hazard must be installed in a controlled environment. Please refer to 
applicable IEC standards.

OMU Testing 
Procedures

Use the following steps to test the OMUs:

To perform the following OMU tests, APSD must be 
disabled to provide a valid amplifier signal. Disable 
APSD at this time.

Open the input to the test source amplifier by removing 
the fiber at the OA input. (Any OA can be used in the 
Single OA configuration.)

Connect the output of that OA to the INPUT of an ODU.
