Connecting SONET/SDH Systems to WaveStar OLS

Background (Continued)
LBO Information
(continued)
A wide variety of LBOs are available for Release 2.1 and subsequent releases. A
family of Green-colored single-mode to single-mode LBOs designed for 1550 nm
with higher power capability is available. To handle the transition from single-mode
to multi-mode, another family of LBOs was developed and is Gray colored. All
inputs to OTPMs must use this Gray LBO.
Refer to Appendix I to obtain tolerances, power ratings, and further data on LBOs.
OTU and OTPM
Information
41-Type OTUs
The 41A(1-16)-type, 41C(1-16)-type, and 41D(1-16)-type Optical Translator Units
(OTU) receive an OC-48 optical signal at its input, downconverts the signal to a
2.5-Gb/s electrical signal, strips away stray tones caused by intermodulation
products, applies a new tone at a code specific frequency, upconverts to an
optical signal, and outputs an WaveStar OLS 40G compatible OC-48 optical
signal at a wavelength specified by its particular code.
The 41F(1-16) type OTU enables Gigabit Ethernet (1-Gb Ethernet) signals to be
transmitted on the 40G system. All OTUs can receive optical signals in the 1310-
nm and 1550-nm range.
OTUs may be used to regenerate the optical signal or provide Wavelength Add
Drop (WAD) capability. The 41B-type, 41E-type and 41G-type OTU translate a
1550-nm signal to a 13100-nm signal for compatibility with 1310-nm equipment.
For additional information on the 41-type OTUs, refer to the Applications,
Planning, and Ordering Guide (365-575-386).
42-Type OTPMs
Each of these Optical Translator Port Modules (OTPM) electrically regenerates a
single input OC-12/STM-4 optical signal and inserts the tone required by
WaveStar OLS 40G onto that signal. The sixteen 42Ax OTPM codes support the
sixteen 1500 nm wavelengths on WaveStar OLS 40G systems with a total
dispersion not exceeding 10,900 ps/nm.
This type of OTPM accepts any OC-12/STM-4 wavelength in the 1280-1335 nm
or 1480- to 1580-nm range and converts it to an electrical STS-12 signal. The
electrical STS-12 signal is reshaped, retimed, and amplified.
