Architecture Release 7 offers optical add-drop multiplexer (OADM) capabilities. Two
components of OADM are add-drop flexibility and flexible amplification. Add-drop
flexibility enables the add-drop of one or more channels without requiring the
through traffic pay the penalty of regeneration. In this case, an OADM node would
allow through, or express, traffic to pass through the node from ODU to OMU
without passing through an OTU for regeneration. See Figure 2-12. To avoid jitter,
all traffic must be regenerated in the fourth OADM node. For instance, in a ring
with 6 nodes, all traffic would require regeneration once. In a ring with 4 OADM
nodes and a number of repeaters, the traffic would not require signal regeneration
with OTUs. The nodes shown in Figure 2-12. can be either dual end terminals or
dual facing shelves. The engineering rules for through traffic can be found in the
Applications, Planning, and Ordering Guide (365-575-384).
