(continued)

There are currently 4 different amplifiers available that may be deployed in two-
amplifier or single-amplifier applications to achieve the necessary distance and
amplification requirements of the ring. This flexible amplification is necessary in
ring applications where span distance between add-drop sites may vary greatly.
The four different amplifiers offer a variety of short-haul and long-haul options
between OADM nodes. Two of the amplifiers offer optical monitoring ports, which
presents an advantage when using low loss OMU/ODUs for making through
wavelength connections, because additional channels connecting to the OMU can
be balanced appropriately without potential disruption to existing traffic.
