Application example  

Overview 

The  port  monitoring  function  monitors  packets  to  be  processed  by  the  switch  CPU.  It  filters 

superfluous packets in the lower layer to protect the switch from illegal packet attacks.  

 

The monitoring is classified into the port-level and host-level. When a switch under an attack 

initially  enables  the  port-level  monitoring,  the  monitoring  program  gathers  statistics  of  the 

packets  to  be  processed  by  CPU.  Users  discover  the  attacked  port  by  statistical  data,  enable 

the host-level monitoring on the port and configure the upper limit value of various packets to 

be processed by CPU in a sampling period.  

 

The  packets  exceeding  the  upper  limit  value  from  the  host,  who  initiates  the  attack,  are 

filtered in the lower layer. They are not routed in the IP layer and not written in the hardware 

routing table. This way, resources of CPU and hardware table items can be saved.  

 

 

 

When performing packet-filtering on the host, who initiates the attack, other hosts still 

can  communicate  normally.  The  monitoring  program  records  the  host  (whose  packets 

need  to  be  processed  by  the  CPU  exceed  the  upper  limit  value  in  a  sampling  period)  in
