IGMP Snooping 

This  section  describes  how  to  configure  IGMP  Snooping,  including  the  basic  configuration

Introduction 

IGMP Snooping is a protocol designed for the switches that do not support IGMP to reduce the 

spreading scope of multicast packets and prevent multicast packets from being spread to the 

network segments that do not need the multicast packets.  

 

It  forms  and  maintains  downstream  port  list  of  each  multicast  group  at  the  local  via 

monitoring  IGMP  packets.  In  this  way,  only  the  multicast  packets  of  the  specified  group  are 

sent to the downstream port of the multicast group when the multicast packets are received. 

Besides, IGMP Snooping is responsible for forwarding IGMP packets. 

 

IGMP Snooping has close relationship with IGMP. Originally, IGMP Snooping is used to maintain 

multicast group information when IGMP does not run, but we permit the two protocols to co-

exist. When the two protocols co-exist, IGMP Snooping does not maintain the multicast group 

information and IGMP is responsible for maintaining the multicast group information, but IGMP 

Snooping forwards the received packets according to the packet type. 

 

IGMP Snooping has the following functions:

Monitor IGMP packets to set up multicast information. GMP Snooping gets the multicast 

information by monitoring IGMP packets and decides which ports on the switch can be 

added  to  a  multicast  group  and  which  networks  connected  to  the  network  has  the 

switch supporting the IGMP protocol.
