MSTP
Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) set by IEEE is used to clear the physical loops at the data link
layer in the network. In narrow sense, STP means the STP protocol defined in IEEE802.1D; in
broad sense, STP includes the STP protocol defined in IEEE802.1D and the improved STP
protocols.
Spanning Tree Protocol is to avoid and clear the loops in the network by negotiating a non-loop
path to the root switch. Through certain arithmetic, it locates the place with loops in the
network, blocks the redundant link and shears the loop network to the tree network without
loops. In this way, the data frames are prevented from increasing and circulating endlessly in
the loop network.
Currently, the Spanning Tree Protocol includes the STP defined in IEEE802.1D, Rapid Spanning
Tree Protocol (RSTP) defined in IEEE802.1w and Multiple Spanning Tree Protocol (MSTP)
defined in IEEE802.1s.
The STP defined in IEEE802.1D cannot be transferred rapidly. Even the point-to-point link or
edge port must wait for the delay time of 30s to transfer to forwarding state.
RSTP defined in IEEE 802.1W is the improved version of STP protocol. The “Rapid” is reflected
