change of network topology. The change results in the traffic on the high-speed link are
removed to low-speed link, which causes network block.
To avoid this problem, MSTP provides Root Guard function to protect the root bridge. The role
of the port whose Root Guard function is enabled on all examples can only be the specified
port. Once the port receives a BPDU with higher priority example, MSTP sets the port example
as BLOCKING and uses LOG information to prompts the user.
You can use the command
spanning-tree guard root
to enable the Root Guard protection
function of the port. The no format or the command
spanning-tree guard none
can be used
to disable the function.

By default, the Root Guard protection function of the port is disabled.
The Root Guard protection function and Loop Guard protection function cannot be enabled at
the same time.

The device can maintain the status of the root port and other blocked ports by receiving BPDU
packets from the upstream devices. But the ports cannot receive the BPDU packets from the
upstream devices because the link is blocked or the uni-directional link fails, and the spanning
tree information on the port times out.
Here, the downstream device re-selects the role of the ports. The ports on the downstream
device that do not receive the BPDU packets change to specified ports, while the blocked ports
turn to forwarding status. In this way, the loops are generated in the switching network.
The Loop Guard function can suppress the generation of the loops. When the port configured
with Loop Guard cannot receive the BPDU packets from the upstream devices, the spanning
tree information on the port times out and the port role is re-calculated, all the examples on
the port are set as Blocking state and the port does not take part in the spanning tree
calculation. If receiving the BPDU packets again, the port takes part in the spanning tree
calculation again.
You can use the command
spanning-tree guard loop
to enable the Loop Guard protection
function of the port. The no format of the command or
spanning-tree guard none
