SPAN Configuration 

Overview 

Switched Port Analyzer (SPAN) is a kind of management mode for monitoring the data traffic 

of  a  switch  port.  It  was  previously  called  Port  Mirroring.  For  more  accurate  and  consolidated 

description, we call it SPAN. SPAN includes the local SPAN and the remote SPAN.   

 

SPAN Session  

SPAN Session is the data traffic between a group of monitored ports and a destination port. It 

permits  the  data  of  multiple  monitored  ports  to  be  mirrored  to  the  destination  port.  The 

mirrored data traffic can be the ingress data traffic or the egress data traffic, or both ingress 

and  egress  traffic.  Users  can  configure  SPAN  for  a  disabled  port,  but  the  SPAN  session  is 

inactive at that time; however as long as the related port is enabled, the SPAN is active.   

 

Local SPAN 

Local SPAN supports the port mirroring on one switch. All monitored ports and the destination 

port are on a same switch. The local SPAN mirrors the data of one or more monitored ports to 

the destination port.  

 

RSPAN—Remote SPAN 

RSPAN  supports  that  the  monitored  ports  and  the  destination  port  are  not  on  one  switch.  It 

realizes  the  remote  monitoring  across  network.  Each  RSPAN  Session  bears  monitoring  traffic 

on  the  specified  RSPAN  VLAN.  RSPAN  includes  the  RSPAN  Source  Session,  the  RSPAN  VLAN 

and the RSPAN Destination Session.  

 

Users  need  to  configure  the  RSPAN  Source  Session  and  the  RSPAN  Destination  Session  on 

different switches. When configuring the RSPAN Source Session, users need to specify one or 

more monitored port(s) and one RSPAN VLAN. The monitored data is sent to the RSPAN VLAN.  

 

Configure the RSPAN Destination Session on another switch, and the destination port and the 

RSPAN  VLAN  need  to  be  specified;  the  RSPAN  Destination  Session  sends  the  data  of  the 

RSPAN VLAN to the destination port.
