STEERING GEAR ASSEMBLY
Steering gear parts m ust be kept free from dirt or fo
reign m atter during overhaul procedures. Any bits of ab
rasive m aterial which m ay get inside the housing during
assembly procedures will quickly dam age the gear m echa
nism. G rease and oil used at assem bly m ust be free from
dirt. W hen handling parts, m ake certain that hands are
clean and that clean cloths are used. Prelubricate all bear
ings, bushings, oil seals, and moving parts at assembly
with proper lubricants specified in L U B R IC A T IO N
(SE C . 0) of this m anual.
DISASSEMBLY
Key num bers in text refer to figure 2.
1. Accomplish all procedures outlined in steps 1 through
7 under “ M echanical Steering G ear O verhaul” in
“ M E C H A N IC A L S T E E R I N G ” section.
2. Rem ove top cover bolts (35) and carefully withdraw
top cover (32), with w orm (38), and ball nut (56) as a
unit. R em ove lower w orm thrust bearing. N O T E :
H old the assembly as shown in figure 14 with hand
holding ball nut (56) from turning and top cover (32)
fro m
dropping.

3. Try action of ball nut on shaft w orm . N u t m ust ro
tate sm oothly with no evidence of binding or rough
ness. Tape shaft w orm at both ends of ball nut to
keep nut from running up or down shaft; then lay the
assem bly flat on w ork bench until ready to disassem
bly.
4. Rem ove top cover from shaft w orm . Rem ove and dis
card top cover gasket (40).
IMPORTANT: Do not hold worm shaft (38) and
ball nut (56) in a vertical position as ball nut
will travel by its own weight to end of shaft. If
ball nut sharply strikes either end of shaft
worm, ball guides will be damaged.
5. Disassemble ball nut as described in “ M E C H A N I
C A L S T E E R I N G ” section.
