Refer to the Service portion of this M anual for “ Bent
H ousing C heck” which is accom plished before axle is
removed from vehicle.
AFTER REMOVAL
A fter axle assem bly has been completely disassembled,
housings m ay be checked for bent condition in following
m anner:
1. T em porarily install wheel hubs, and adjust wheel
bearings so that hubs will ju st turn. Do not lock ad
justm ent.
2. After axle shafts have been inspected as previously
described, install shafts and draw stud nuts up tight.
3. Indicators as shown in figure 12, can be m ade locally
from 3/16 inch drill rod to dimensions shown. R e
move any burrs existing on shaft splines; then use
hose clam ps to hold indicators to shafts.
4. Each indicator m ust be positioned at right angle to its
shaft. Both indicators m ust be in alignm ent with one
another. There should be a slight gap between the
points. M easure and note dim ensions of this gap.
5. R otate shafts sim ultaneously and m easure gap at four
points, 90 degrees apart. If gap at any point exceeds
original gap by m ore than 1/16 inchs axle housing is
bent and should be replaced.
REPAIR
DIFFERENTIAL CASE
Excessive run-out on differential case m ay be corrected
by machining flange at gear side of case. Rem ove suffi
cient metal from flange to correct run-out. Rem ove just
enough m etal to bring run-out within limits shown in
“ Specifications.”
OIL SEAL CONTACT SURFACES
Surface of parts, such as propeller shaft yoke, which is
contacted by oil seals m ust be free of corrosion, pits and
grooves. This condition can som etim es be cleaned up with
abrasives. W hen cleaning fails to clean up and restore
smooth finish, a new part m ust be installed.
OIL SEAL REPLACEMENT
Pinion oil seal is installed in a pressed m etal retainer
and is serviced as an assembly, therefore no replacem ent
inform ation is necessary.
