INSTALLATION OF COUNTERSHAFT
(Key N um bers Refer to Figure 1)
1. Using a suitable sleeve, start countershaft front
bearing (61) into bore of transm ission case (56). P o
sition countershaft front bearing retainer against
bearing and tap into case until edge of retainer is
flush with case.
N O T E : Be sure to coat ou ter e d g e of b e a r
in g retainer w ith s e a lin g cem ent.
2. Lower countershaft assembly into transm ission case,
guiding rear end of shaft (55) out through rear bearing
bore of case.
3. M ove countershaft assembly forward, guiding front
end of shaft into countershaft front bearing.
IM P O R T A N T : To pre ven t d a m a g e to coun ter

steel stock, a p p ro x im a te ly 3 /8 -in c h thick, b e
tw e e n cou n tersh aft drive g e a r (5 7 ) a n d w a ll of
case.
4. Since countershaft rear bearing (37) should fit tight
on countershaft, use suitable sleeve to drive against bear
ing inner race. Seat bearing on shaft, then remove steel
strips and tap bearing into bore seating snap ring (40)
against case.
5. H and-tighten countershaft rear bearing nut (39)
against bearing.
INSTALLATION OF REVERSE
IDLER GEAR
(Key N um bers Refer to Figure 1)
1. Position reverse idler gear bearings (45) in reverse
idler gear (46)
2. Position idler gear, bearings, and thrust washers (44
and 47) in case, with large gear on idler gear tow ard front
of case. M esh idler gear with countershaft and align bore
of bearings with hole in transm ission case.
NOTE:
Be sure the ta n g on each thrust w a s h e r
fits into th e dep ression p ro v id e d in the tra n s
m ission case.
3. Insert reverse idler gear shaft (42) in rear of case, not
ing that “ flat” on shaft is squared tow ard countershaft for
proper lock by countershaft rear bearing cap (38).
4. Set countershaft rear bearing cap in place to check
lock of reverse idler shaft. Secure bearing cap with two
finger-tight cap screws to keep countershaft in place d u r
ing installation of mainshaft.

DRIVE GEAR

1. Using a suitable tool, tap m ain drive gear and bearing
assembly into transm ission case.
N O T E : T a p b e a rin g until s n a p rin g is flush w ith
case.
