TRANSMISSION AND CLUTCH 7-122
ASSEMBLY
NOTE: Key numbers in text refer to Figure 1.
1. Place pressure plate (6) face down on arbor press bed
on 3/8-inch thick spacers (fig. 2).
NOTE: If face of pressure plate was machined,
shims of a thickness equal to the amount of
metal removed must be installed over each
spring post on pressure plate. Shims can be
made locally.
2. Place pressure spring (21) on each spring post on
pressure plate (fig. 5).
3. Place clutch cover (14) over springs, with release lever
counterweights and release lever yokes extending
through holes in cover, and with m arks m ade prior to
disassembly aligned. (If a new unm arked pressure
plate or cover is used, the cover and pressure plate as
sembly should be balanced after completely as
sembled.)
4. Place bar across cover, clearing all thrust plate cap
screw holes and release lever yokes. T urn arbor press
screw dow n against bar and force cover down against
press bed, com pressing pressure springs. Install ad
justing nut (11) on each release lever yoke (12) until
yoke end is flush with end of nut.
5. Place thrust plate (13) over each release lever adjust
ing nut (11) and attach with two cap screws, but do
not tighten cap screws. Rem ove assem bly from arbor
press.
6. The clutch is now ready for final release lever adjust
m ent. This adjustm ent is required only at assembly
and m ust not be m ade to com pensate for clutch fac
ing wear. A djustm ent m ust be m ade with the clutch
assembly bolted to a flywheel with spacers 3/8-inch
thick between the pressure plate and flywheel (fig.6).
7. W ith clutch bolted to flywheel with spacers in place,
lay a straightedge across clutch cover, positioned so
m easurem ent can be m ade at point shown in Figure
6. T urn adjusting nut (11) on release lever yoke (12)
as required to obtain a dim ension of 1-1/32-inch from
edge of straight edge to the crown of the lever tip.
Adjust each release lever in this m anner. All three lev
ers m ust be in the sam e plane within 0.031” .
8. A fter com pleting adjustm ents, tighten thrust plate cap
screws to 15 foot-pounds torque. Install wood blocks
between release levers and cover plate to keep plate
retracted until clutch is installed. Rem ove clutch as
sembly from flywheel.
9. If a new pressure plate or cover was installed, the
com plete assem bly m ust be balanced within 1 oz.-in„
by attaching balance weights as required to side of
cover with cap screws. Balance weights are available
in three sizes - light, m edium and heavy.
RELEASE LEVER HEIGHT ADJUSTMENT
(Forged Lever Type)
Each release lever height adjustm ent nut is retained in
set position by a spring strap which is attached to clutch
cover with two cap screws.
T o check and adjust lever height adjustm ent, perform
the following:
Use the sam e 3/8-inch type spacers shown in Figure 6.
The dim ension from top of release lever to top surface of
cover should m easure 1-3/16” plus or minus 1/32” and
all levers m ust be in sam e plane within 0.031 inch. If
height dim ensions are not as specified, m ake adjustm ent
as follows:
