c. Install clutch housing (1) on transm ission case (74),
install lock washers and nuts on studs, and tighten
firmly.
d. Rem ove drive gear bearing cap (80), drive gear (76),
and bearing assembly (77) from transm ission case.
ASSEMBLY OF SUBASSEMBLIES
Key num bers in text refer to Figure 13 unless otherwise
specified.
The im portance of cleanliness cannot be overemphasized.
Rebuild of the transm ission should not be attem pted in
a dirty w orking area. All parts except those being actually
worked on should be kept covered with clean paper. Avoid
nicking, m arring, or burring all surfaces. W henever a com
mon tool is specified, such as a “ soft,, ham m er or a vise
with “ soft-jaws," that tool should be used. Substitution of
a hard ham m er for exam ple, m ay seriously dam age the
transmission. Special tools mentioned in text and shown
in illustrations should be em ployed. List of tools will be

W hen assembling the transmission, use new lock wire,
snap rings, cotter pins, gaskets, and oil seals. Lubricate
each moving part with lubricant specified in L U B R IC A
T IO N (SEC. 0) of this m anual. C oat all bushings with a
light coat of petrolatum before installation.
MAIN DRIVE GEAR ASSEMBLY
1. Lubricate main drive gear bearing (77) and drive gear
shaft (76) with lubricant recom m ended in L U B R IC A
T IO N (SEC. 0) of this m anual.
2. Start bearing assembly (77) straight on shaft of drive
gear (76) with bearing snap ring tow ard pilot end of
gear. S upport front inner race of bearing and press
gear into bearing tight against front face of gear.
3. Install bearing retainer nut or snap ring (78).
COUNTERSHAFT ASSEMBLY
1. Install W oodruff keys (89) in 3rd and 4th gear slots
in countershaft (52).
2. Lubricate the countershaft (52) and bore of each gear
before installing gears on countershaft.
3. Using an arbor press, start 3rd speed gear (86)
straight on countershaft (52) with long hub of gear
tow ard the rear. Align keyway in gear with key in
countershaft and press gear tight against shoulder on
shaft.
4. Press 4th speed gear (85) on countershaft (52) in same
m anner used to install the 3rd speed gear. Long hub
of gear goes tow ard rear.
5. Install drive gear spacer (84) and drive gear key (89).
6. Press countershaft drive gear (4) on countershaft (52)
with long hub tow ard rear. Install gear in sam e way
used to install other gears.
7. Install snap ring (5) in groove of countershaft (52.) Be
sure snap ring is well seated and locked in groove.
MAINSHAFT ASSEMBLY
1. C lam p m ainshaft (43) in a vise with soft jaw s with
front end up.
2. Drop 2nd speed gear locating washer (48) into posi
tion over m ainshaft (43).
3. W ith lock pin (50) in place in 2nd speed gear bushing
sleeve (49), install bushing sleeve on m ainshaft with
lock pin tow ard upper end of mainshaft.
4. T o insure a proper tight stack-up between 2nd speed
gear locating washer (48), 2nd speed gear bushing
sleeve (49), 2nd speed gear retaining w asher (18), and
snap ring (17), the following procedure should be ex
ercised.
a. Before 2nd speed gear (51) is installed on bush
ing sleeve (49), place retaining washer (18) on
m ainshaft and hold dow n securely against bush
ing sleeve (49).
