2. C ut lock wire, then remove cap screws (3) and sepa
rate case halves (fig. 7).
3. Rem ove four pinions (9) and thrust washers (8) from

spider. Rem ove differential side gears (7) and thrust
washers (6) from case.
4. If differential side bearings require replacem ent, in
Figure 8 to remove bearings.

1. Hold propeller shaft yoke (16) with holding bar (J-
3453) in m anner illustrated and described in the Ser
vice portion of this M anual, then remove nut.
2. Place assembly in arbo r press with cage on bed of a r
bor. Press drive pinion (2) dow nw ard and out of
cage (8).
3. Remove pinion bearing adjusting spacer (4), from pin
ion. Carefully tag adjusting spacer for reassem bly ref
erence. Som e axles also use a spacing washer (5) in
addition to the adjusting spacer.
4. Pry oil seal and retainer assem bly (15) from cage.
NOTE: Some axles use a flat washer (12)
under oil seal retainer.
5. Lift outer bearing cone (10) from cage.
6. W hen inspection indicates necessity, cups (6 and 9)
can be rem oved from cage (fig. 9) with rem over (J-
3940).
7. If necessary, pinion bearing inner cone (3) can be re
moved with universal puller (J-3493) (fig. 10).
8. Rem ove stake points holding straight roller bearing
(1) to pinion, then remove bearing (fig. 10).

All com ponent parts of an axle should be thoroughly
cleaned in a cleaning fluid, using a stiff brush if necessary,
to remove dirt, old lubricant, or gasket m aterial.
CLEANING BEARINGS
Proper bearing cleaning is im portant. Bearings should
always be cleaned separately from other rear axle parts.
1. Soak all bearings in clean kerosene, Diesel fuel, gaso
line, or cleaning solvent. Bearings should not be
cleaned in a hot solution tank.
2. Slush bearings in cleaning solution until all old lubri
cant is loosened. H old bearing races so th a t bearings
will not rotate; then brush bearings with soft bristled
brush until A L L dirt has been rem oved. Remove
loose particles of dirt by striking flat against a wood
block.
3. Rinse bearings in clean fluid. W hile holding races to
prevent rotation, blow dry with com pressed air. Do
