sary, fluted sleeve (3) onto mainshaft. Seat sleeve
against shoulder on shaft.
NOTE: Do not press or drive against ground
thrust face of sleeve (3).
5. Assem ble 4th speed (overdrive) gear (4) to m ainshaft
with clutch teeth up.
6. Assem ble 3rd-4th speed clutch gear (5) to m ainshaft
and secure with snap ring (6). Snap ring m ust be seat
ed in groove of m ainshaft and not distorted. Assemble
drive gear pocket bearing (12), Figure 8 to front of
m ainshaft. Since pocket bearing fits right on M ain
shaft, use tubing to drive against inner race of bear
ing.
NOTE: Assemble pocket bearing, so that snap
ring is toward mainshaft.
7. Turn m ainshaft end for end in vise and clam p on
3rd-4th speed clutch gear (5).
8. Assem ble lst-2nd speed clutch collar (7) with longer
hub dow n tow ard 2nd speed gear (2).
9. Slide 1st speed gear sleeve (8) in position on m ain
shaft and coat fluted area with light grease.
10. Assemble 1st speed gear (9) over gear sleeve wi h
clutching teeth down tow ard front of m ainshaft.

11. Remove m ainshaft sub-assem bly from vise and as
semble to case by lowering rear of shaft into case and
out through m ainshaft rear bearing bore. Lower front
of m ainshaft into position and m esh all gears.
12. C o at thrust face of 1st speed gear thrust washer (10)
with light grease and assem ble on rear of m ainshaft
with flat face in tow ard 1st speed gear.
13. Use 3 /4 ” stock to block m ainshaft across drive gear
bearing cap opening at front of case. Position m ain
shaft rear bearing (11) on shaft with snap ring to rear.
Use caution to align outer race of bearing with case
bore. Use tubing to drive on inner race of bearing
until bearing is seated against thrust w asher (10). R e
move 3 /4 ” stock and tap bearing into case until snap
ring seats against case.
14. C o at rear bearing washer (12) with light grease and
assemble next to rear bearing.
15. Assem ble speedom eter drive gear or spacer (13) on
mainshaft.
16. If oil seal (14) was removed from rear bearing cap
(15), use gasket cem ent on O .D . of seal and press into
bearing cap.
C A U T IO N : Use care to a v o id distorting seal.
Press in n e w speedom eter b u sh in g ( 1 6 ) if re
m oved.
17. Apply gasket cem ent to m ainshaft rear bearing cap
