SECTION 10
WHEELS AND TIRES
Wheels used on vehicles covered in this man
ual are either cast (fig. 1) or Budd type. On cast
wheels, tires are mounted on rims which are se
cured on wheel with rim clamps and nuts. Budd
type front wheels have a single nut, while rear
wheels have inner and outer nuts.
CAST TYPE WHEELS
(Refer to Figure 1)
On a new vehicle, or after wheel has been
changed the wheel nut torque must be checked at
100, 500, 1000, and every 1000 miles thereafter.
The following torquing sequence is recom
mended to provide the least amount of wheel run
out, with proper torque for cast type wheels:
1. Install rim clamps and nuts finger tight.
2. Starting at bottom, tighten number 1 nut to
15-20 foot-pounds.
3. Tighten nuts 2, 3 ,4 , 5to 190-210foot-pounds
and in this sequence.
4. Retorque nut number 1 to 190-210 foot
pounds. All nuts should now be evenly torqued, and
wheel run-out reduced to a minimum.
DISC WHEELS (10 HOLE TYPE)
(Refer to Figure 2)
Wheel hub flanges should be clean and free of
rust, or scale build-up if wheels are to be retain
ed securely. The following tightening sequence
will give best results and aid in producing correct
wheel nut torque:
1. Tighten nuts 1, 2 , 3 , and 4 in the sequence
indicated in Figure 2.
2. Draw nuts up alternately a little at a time
until torque of approximately 200 foot-pounds is
reached.
3. Tighten remainder of nuts to 300-400 foot
pounds while alternating from side to side of wheel.
4. Final torque nuts 1, 2, 3, and 4 to 300-400
foot-pounds.
BUDD TYPE WHEELS
All Budd type inner and outer nuts used on
right side of vehicle have right-hand threads. All
inner and outer nuts used on left side have left-
hand threads. Both inner, and outer nuts are appro
priately stamped with the letter L or R to signify
at which side of vehicle they are to be used.
1. All inner nuts must be tightened first to
proper torque, before completing tightening of
outer wheel nuts. Tighten inner nuts to 450-500
foot-pounds.
2. Tighten outer nuts to 450-500 foot-pounds
torque.
