W hen units are overhauled, the com ponent parts should
be thoroughly cleaned and inspected. Parts should be
thoroughly cleaned in a solvent; then inspected for wear
and tolerances.
1. Remove all portions of old gaskets or sealing co m
pound. Use a stiff brush on all parts.
2. Slush bearing assemblies in cleaning fluid. If solid
particles rem ain in bearings, tap the assem bly sharply
on a block of wood to dislodge particles. W hen drying
bearings with com pressed air, do not spin bearings.
Slowly turn the bearings with hand while directing the
air at right angle to the assem bly. Lubricate clean
bearings thoroughly; then cover with a clean cloth
until ready to use.
3. G ears having teeth broken, chipped, cracked, or worn
should be replaced. Sm all nicks or burrs on gear teeth
m ay be removed with a slip stone or hone. This m eth
od, however, is only practical on small nicks.
4. N otches on shift rods should be inspected for worn
condition, and poppet springs should be tested for
proper pressure.
SUBASSEMBLY BUILD-UP
Key num bers in text refer to Figure 1.

1. Drive countershaft gear key into slot in countershaft;
then using arbor press and suitable driver, press gear
(28) into place on countershaft.
2. Install new snap ring (30) in groove at forward edge
of countershaft.
3. Press bearing cone on each end of countershaft, being
sure that cone seats firmly against shoulder on coun
tershaft.

1. Lubricate bearing surface on m ainshaft with transm is
sion oil, then install overdrive jear (6) on m ainshaft
wi h spur teeth tow ard front of m ainshaft.
2. Press direct and overdrive clutch gear (5) into place
on m ainshaft with side of gear m arked “ X ” tow ard
front. Secure gear on shaft with snap ring (48).
3. Install low speed gear (20) on m ainshaft with spur
teeth tow ard rear end of m ainshaft.
4. Install low speed clutch gear (9) at rear end of m ain
shaft with side of gear m arked “ X ” tow ard rear.
5. Install shift collars (4 and 8) on respective clutch
gears.

Using tool (J-6419) as shown in Figure 6, install bear
ing (35) with snap ring groove tow ard front of main drive
gear. Bearing inner race m ust seat firmly against shoulder
on gear.

1. Using a driver or arbor press install drive gear front
bearing (38) evenly into bearing cap (42).
2. W ith lip of new oil seal (39) facing tow ard rear, in
stall seal evenly into front of bearing cap.

1. M ount cover in vise by right-hand flange. D rop one
poppet spring (50), and ball (51) into place in poppet
well in cover, then insert shift rod (54) into hole in
front of cover and through rod support while holding
poppet ball down to perm it rod to pass.
2. Assem ble shift fork (7) on rod and retain with set
screw' and lock wire.
