d. Position 1st and reverse shift fork (17) on shift
rod with offset for lock screw (6) tow ard repair
man.
e. Push 1st and reverse shift rod into the “ N eu tral”
position.
f. Install lock screw (6) in lug (10) and fork (17);
then wire securely. Refer to Figure 28.
5. Assemble 4th and 5th shift rod (13) and shift fork
(7) as follows:
a. Push shift rod through forward opening in hous
ing (1), 4th and 5th forward rod support, and
4th and 5th shift fork (7), with offset for lock
screw (6) tow ard rear of housing (1).
b. Install two interlock balls (15) between 1st
and reverse and 4th and 5th poppet holes of
rod support.
c. Place interlock cross pin (18) into hole in 4th
and 5th speed shift rod (13).
d. Place poppet spring (16) in position in well
of rod support.
e. Position poppet ball (15) on top of spring (16).
f. Using rod installer tool (J-8633) as before (fig.
26), com press spring in m anner th at will allow
shift rod to pass through rod support.
g. Install lock screw (6) in lug of shift fork (7).
Tighten screw firmly; then wire securely.
h. Push shift rod into the “ N eutral” position.
6. Install 2nd and 3rd speed shift rod (12), lug (5), and
shift fork (19) as described in the following:
a. Push shift rod through forward opening in hous
ing (1), through lug (5), and forward rod support.
b. Install two interlock balls (15) between 2nd and
3rd and 4th and 5th poppet holes of center rod
support.
c. Slide 2nd and 3rd shift fork (19) on shift rod,
with offset for lock screw tow ard repairm an.
d. Place poppet spring (16) in position in well of
center rod support.
e. Position poppet ball (15) on top of spring (16).
f. Using rod installer tool (J-8633) as before (fig.
27), com press spring and ball in m anner that
will allow shift rod to pass through center rod
support.
g. Install lock screw in lug (5) and shift fork (19)
and tighten firmly. W ire lock screw securely.
h. M ove shift rod into the “ N eutral” position; then
check installation of interlock balls and pin by
trying to shift into two speeds at the same time.
Shift rods should not shift into m ore than one
speed at a time.
j. R eturn shift rods to “ N e u tral” position.

ve n tio n al g e a rsh ift lever, a cco m p lish the fol
lo w in g procedures:
1. Insert gearshift lever through bottom of tower. Posi
tion shift lever so notches in ball portion engage pivot
pin heads.
2. Install spring seat washer (concave side against ball
portion of lever). Install gearshift lever support spring
against spring seat washer and control tower.
3. Position dust cover on gearshift lever and install gear
shift lever knob.

1. Install countershaft front bearing (30) in bore of
transm ission case. Be sure to apply pressure on outer
race of bearing only.
2. Place countershaft front bearing spacer (31) in posi
tion on front end of the countershaft (38).
3. Tip rear of countershaft (38) down and lower the as
sembly into transmission case, running rear end of
countershaft through rear bearing opening at rear of
case, far enough to perm it front of countershaft to be
lowered into place. Push countershaft forw ard into
proper position.
4. Using ham m er and suitable installer sleeve, install
countershaft rear bearing (7) on rear end of counter
shaft (38). Install countershaft rear bearing retainer
nut (8) loosely.
REVERSE IDLER G E A R IN ST A L L A T IO N
1. Insert two roller bearings (42 and 45), separated by
spacer (43), into hub of reverse idler gear (44).
2. Lower reverse idler gear assem bly into position in
transm ission case. The gear with cham fered teeth
should be tow ard rear of case.
3. Insert reverse idler shaft (41) through hole in rear of
case, through reverse idler gear (44) and into forward
support boss of transm ission case. The shaft should
be driven in, until forward face of slot in shaft (41) is
flush with rear face of transm ission case and slot
lined up to perm it installation of locking plate (39).
4. Install reverse idler shaft lock plate (39) on idler shaft
