ends of piston pin (fig. 14).
2. Install com pression and oil rings on pistons. Three
rings are used in each piston, two compression rings
at top and one ventilated oil ring at bottom (fig. 15).
NOTE: Compression rings must be installed
with surface marked "TOP" facing top of pis
ton. Some compression rings may have three
dots in a row. This is to indicate top of com
pression ring.
3. Press the connecting rod bearing inserts into the con
necting rod and cap with hand, m aking sure that the
locating lips on inserts engage the locking notches in
rod and cap. T ag or m ark bearing caps and rods so
that each cap will be installed on rod from which it
was removed as shown in Figure 1 5.

CYLINDER BLOCK INSTALLATION
NOTE: When assembling the offset connecting
rod into the cylinder, make sure that longest
connecting rod boss is facing toward the center
of the compressor (see fig. 16). Stagger ring
gaps 120 degrees from each other before in
serting piston into cylinder block.
1. Insert pistons into cylinder block from bottom side,
com pressing piston rings to m ake rings enter cylinder
bores.
2. Place new cylinder block-to-crankcase gasket over
studs on top of crankcase. Hold cylinder block over
crankcase with lower ends of connecting rods ex tend
ing just below top of crankcase, then lower cylinder
block onto crankcase.
NOTE: Cylinder block must be positioned on
crankcase with marks made prior to disassem
bly aligned. Attach cylinder block to crankcase
with six lock washers and nuts. Tighten nuts to
12 to 17 foot-pounds torque.

3. T urn the assem bly over and position connecting rods
on crankshaft journals, m aking sure bearing inserts
are in place. Install connecting rod bearing caps and
inserts, m atching bearing cap and rod as shown in Fig
ure 15. Install nuts on connecting rod bolts, tighten to
8 to 10 foot-pounds torque.
ASSEMBLY OF CYLINDER HEAD
(Key N um bers Refer to Figure 3)
1. T urn cylinder head upside down and insert valve cages
(1), springs (2) and valves (5) into cavities in bottom
of cylinder head. Install copper washer (3) and valve
seat (4). Tighten firmly.
2. Place one inlet valve in recess in bottom of cylinder
head, with hole in valve aligned with valve guard pin
hole in head. Place inlet valve guard on top of inlet
valve, with dowel pin inserted through hole in inlet
